From Latin brassica, the Roman name for the cabbage. Botany kept it: the genus Brassica still covers cabbage, kale, turnip, mustard and broccoli, which is a lot of dinner for one word.

The false seam. That -ik- at the end is the trap. Esperanto uses -ik- in borrowed pairs like and muzika, and fizika, so the eye offers you bras-ik-o and waits for you to supply a root bras-. There is not one. - came from Latin in a single piece and the only removable part is the -o.
It is the second word in this batch with that particular trap. , rank 2475, has the same non-existent -ik- in it, and the same answer: one borrowing, no seam.
In the kitchen and the garden. is the cabbage proper, and it heads a family that Esperanto builds rather than borrows: florbrasiko is cauliflower (flower-cabbage), brusela is a Brussels sprout, is red cabbage. Cheap, hardy and everywhere: which is presumably why a subtitle corpus turns it up at rank 2480 while more glamorous vegetables do not appear at all.
