He built a new shelf out of wood.

A shelf is not a small bre. -- is the diminutive suffix and it is everywhere: gives a cottage, gives o a booklet, rido gives o a smile. So presents itself as br- or bre- plus --, and the learner looks for the root it shrank. There is not one. - is a single borrowed root from German Brett, a plank, and the - sitting in the middle of it is German spelling doing nothing at all. The tell, if you want one, is that the supposed root would have to be bre, which is not a possible Esperanto root and not a word.

The near neighbour is a genuine -- word, which sharpens the point. is a shelf; o is the whole set of them, a bookcase or shelving unit, using -- for a collection. That build is real and you can trust it. Beside it, o would be a little shelf, -- applied on top of the finished root, and that is real too. So the same three letters appear twice in this word family, once as an accident and once as a suffix, and only the second one can be taken apart.

Furnishing the sentence. You put things , with the accusative because it is motion onto, and they then stand without it. Librobreto is a bookshelf, murbreto a wall shelf, fenestrobreto a windowsill, kamenbreto a mantelpiece. Ŝranko is the cupboard the shelves live in, a drawer, and in the plural is the ordinary way to say shelving in general.
