Transitive, with what you are defending as the object and the threat introduced by : . To defend yourself is sin - note sin, not , because it is the object. Defendo is the defence, defendanto the defender, sendefenda defenceless. It shades into , which is standing watch over something, and , which is shielding something weaker; implies an attack is actually coming, which is why it is the courtroom verb too.
