Do not glance backwards!
- marks the sudden start of an action, so becomes a glance rather than a sustained look. The same prefix gives for to cry out, for to catch sight of, for to jump to one's feet. Note the difference between , which is about the looking, and , which is about the seeing: you glance and may see nothing, but if you something it registered. Both take a direct object, so no preposition after them.
