From Latin excitare ('to rouse, call out'), via French exciter. It is a single borrowed root, not the Esperanto prefix ek- plus a verb sciti, which does not exist.

looks like ek- plus something, and it is not - there is no verb sciti. It is one borrowed root, and the false seam trips up more learners than the meaning does. Transitive, so the crowd (gets excited) when the news it.
