always takes an object: you wake somebody else. Waking up yourself is , and mixing the two is the standard beginner slip, because English lets "I woke" and "I woke him" share a verb. The figurative sense works exactly as it does in English, so words, memories and music can all a feeling. A vekhorloĝo is an alarm clock, built transparently from the verb plus the clock, which is the sort of compound that makes the language quick to read.
