Transitive, so the thing avoided takes -n and no preposition: eviti la demandon. When what you are avoiding is an action, Esperanto takes a plain infinitive - eviti diri, eviti renkonti lin - where English insists on the gerund, "avoid saying". That is a genuinely easier construction, and it is worth noticing because the same pattern holds for most Esperanto verbs that govern another verb. Neevitebla means unavoidable and is one of those transparent compounds you can build the first time you need it, without ever having read it.
