English lets one verb do both jobs: I ended the meeting, the meeting ended. Esperanto makes you choose. is transitive and needs an object, is what the object then does by itself. but . Getting this backwards is the single most common slip English speakers make with the -- suffix, and it happens across the whole verb system, not just here.

The root also gives for the end, fine for finally, and the emphatic for at long last.
