garaĝo

A garage is not an age. The word ends in what looks exactly like -aĝ- plus -o, and aĝo is a real Esperanto word meaning age, so the eye offers you gar- + aĝo. Refuse it. There is no -aĝ- suffix in Esperanto at all - aĝo is a free root, not an affix - and gar- means nothing. Garaĝo is one root borrowed whole from French.

It is worth having a name for this class, because the language is full of it. Kaĝo, a cage, is not k- + aĝo. Vojaĝo is not a road's age. Etaĝo is a storey and has no et- in it. In each case the ĝ is part of a French or Italian import that arrived intact, and the resemblance to the affix system is a coincidence the spelling cannot help. The genuine suffix that looks nearly identical is -aĵ- with the accent the other way up, which makes a concrete thing out of a root: manĝaĵo food, novaĵo news. One hat, two very different jobs, and a reason to read the hats carefully - orthography and punctuation has the full set.

Two senses, as in English. The place you keep the car, and the place you take it when it stops. A garaĝisto is the mechanic; garaĝi is to garage a vehicle, though parkumi covers ordinary parking.
