describes a state, not an event: it means to be aware, and it takes or a clause. If you want the moment the penny drops, use i, and if you want to find something out from outside, that is . Getting those three apart is most of the work here, since English "realise" covers all of them. The rest of the family is straightforward: konscio for consciousness, konscia for deliberate as well as conscious, and senkonscia for unconscious.
