Translation
midnight
Word origin
An Esperanto compound of nokto ('night') and mezo ('middle'), joined with the linking o that Esperanto uses to keep long compounds readable. Latin nox, noctis and medius stand behind the two halves.
- Origin
- Esperanto compound
- Root
- nokto + mezo
- English cognates
- nocturnal, medium
Examples
.
The party lasted until midnight.
.
At midnight the clock struck.
.
I woke up a little after midnight.
Take it apart and it stays taken apart: plus , the middle of the night. Its daytime twin is , plus , which is noon, and the pair is worth learning together because English hides the symmetry behind midnight and midday. Note that Esperanto puts the middle second while English puts it first, so the compound reads night-middle rather than mid-night.
