in a group of that many

Examples

e .

They came to the meeting as a group of three.

e .

We worked as a pair all day.

e.

The soldiers marched five abreast.

e.

He prefers to stay on his own.

e .

The children played in pairs in the garden.

-- says how many are acting together. The adverb is the usual form: e, e, e, e. o as a noun names the pair itself, and a describes something done in twos.

Two comparisons keep it in place. Against --: a is three times as much of something, e is three people side by side. Against --: an is a mass of trees nobody has counted, while -- states the exact size of the group, which is its whole point.

Also keep it away from , the small preposition for distribution. means two apiece and e means two at a time, and in speech the pair of them run together far too easily.
