Word origin
From Italian parente ('relative'), from Latin parens ('parent', from parere, 'to give birth'). Italian widened the word from parent to any family member, and Esperanto borrowed that wider sense; English parent kept the narrow one.

A classic false friend: is any relative at all, a cousin, an uncle, a grandmother. Your actual parents are your . Italian and Spanish speakers will recognise the trap at once, because parente and pariente pull the same trick on English speakers.
