covers both English senses: breaking faith with someone, and inadvertently revealing something you meant to hide. The second is the more literary use and works well - , his voice gave him away. It is transitive and the betrayed party is the object, no preposition. Do not confuse it with , which is deceiving someone who never trusted you in the first place; requires that trust existed. The root gives perfido for treachery, o for a traitor and perfida for treacherous.
