From the Polish name Polska, which goes back to the Polanie, an early tribe whose own name is built on pole, 'field'. The Poles are, at root, the people of the open country.

The root is pol-, so a Pole is a polo, the language is and the country is Pollando. That pattern holds across the nationality words: pick up one and you have the set. It is not an idle example either, since Zamenhof published the first Esperanto grammar in Warsaw in 1887.
