This is plus --, the place suffix, so a church is literally a praying-place. Learn the suffix and you get a whole vocabulary for nothing: school, flat, o kitchen, office. Usefully, is neutral about denomination or religion, so it covers a chapel or a cathedral without fuss, and where the distinction matters you say , or sinagogo. Note that Esperanto keeps the article where English drops it: you go , never bare .
