The prefix - means once more or back again, so gives at no extra cost, exactly as gives and gives . Its most useful outing is the noun: is the everyday goodbye, literally until the seeing-again, and it is what you will hear at the end of every meeting and every congress. Shortened to it becomes casual, roughly see you. Note that keeps a direct object with -n, since the prefix changes the timing of the verb, not its grammar.
