uragano

A word Europe had to import. Mediterranean sailors knew gales; they had never met the rotating Atlantic storm, so when Spanish ships reached the Caribbean they took the local name for it. Hurakan is Taino, the language of the islands, and it travelled into Spanish as huracan and out again into every language in Europe, Esperanto included. This is one of the tiny handful of Taino roots the language holds, and the next word in this very band, maizo, is another. Two in twenty is a remarkable concentration.

The weather set, ranked. Vento at 459 is wind, ventego at 838 is a gale (literally a big wind, with the -eg- augmentative), ŝtormo at 1,302 is a storm, fulmotondro at 2,297 is a thunderstorm, and uragano sits at the top of the scale. Note that ventego is the only one of the five you could have built yourself.

Figurative use is standard. Uragano de aplaŭdo is a storm of applause and uragane means furiously. As with English, the word carries so much weight that overusing it costs you the effect, so save it for the day the roof actually goes.
