Translation

to hurry, to hurry up

Word origin

From Old French despeechier, formed as the opposite of empeechier (modern empêcher, 'to hinder'), which goes back to Late Latin impedicare ('to shackle, to entangle'), from pedica ('fetter'). To dépêcher was to free something from its obstacles, hence to send it off quickly. English dispatch and impeach come from the same family.
