is one expression, not du + coup: it means "so" or "as a result", and has nothing to do with a blow. It links a result to what came before (il pleuvait, du coup on est restés à la maison), and in speech it also opens a sentence as a plain "so" (du coup, on fait quoi ?). It is spoken French, very common and much overused by younger speakers; in writing, use donc.
