Son usage implique la familiarité ; avec des inconnus ou des supérieurs, on utilise bonjour (arrivée) et au revoir (départ). Salut avec un vouvoiement serait contradictoire et incongru.
Salut est aussi un nom masculin littéraire ou religieux signifiant salvation ou safety (son salut éternel, trouver son salut dans le travail). L'Armée du Salut (The Salvation Army) en est l'exemple institutionnel. Dans les messages écrits informels, salut ! fonctionne aussi comme ouverture ou fermeture de SMS.
