Ch 3 · Lesson 11

-a: one woman or many things?

A word ending in -a is feminine singular in the first declension, and neuter PLURAL in every neuter noun. Readers take for one weapon and for one word.

The rule

Look the word up. , f. is feminine singular in -a. , n. and , n. make their plural in -a: , . Then check the verb: a plural verb (, ) beside an -a word is a strong hint that the -a is neuter plural. An adjective copies whichever it is.
