Antea is ante with an old case ending stuck on the end, and it is purely temporal: at an earlier time, formerly. It never means "in front".

Keep the family apart, because they overlap on the page and not in grammar. Ante is a preposition governing the accusative (ante portam, "in front of the gate") and can also stand alone as an adverb. Antea is only an adverb and takes no case at all. For "before" as a conjunction joining clauses you need antequam or priusquam, which split into ante ... quam often enough to look like something else. Its mirror is postea, "afterwards", built the same way from post, and the pair antea ... postea is the natural frame for narrating in order.
