Antrum, antri, n., second declension, and a Greek loan: antron. That shows in where it turns up. Prose reaches for specus or spelunca; antrum belongs to poets, and it carries the atmosphere with it, the cave that is a shrine or a hiding place rather than a hole in a hill. Virgil puts the Sibyl in one and Aeneas and Dido in another.
English kept the word only as a technical term. An antrum in anatomy is a hollow chamber in a bone, most familiarly the maxillary antrum behind the cheek. Nothing poetic survives, which is a fair summary of what English does to Latin generally.
