cadaver

Cadaver, cadaveris, n., third declension neuter, formed on cado: literally the thing that has fallen. Latin keeps its dead bodies sorted by dignity. Corpus is any body, living or dead, and can be reverent. Cadaver is a corpse and a blunt one, used of animals and of enemies left where they dropped, with a whiff of carrion about it - the word a writer reaches for when he wants to allow the dead no standing at all.

Manuscripts write cadauer and cadauera because u and v were a single letter, so what looks like a variant is only the same word in medieval dress. English took cadaver for the dissecting room and cadaverous for the look of somebody who belongs on the table.
