Mortuus, mortua, mortuum, first and second declension. It is the perfect participle of morior, "die", working as an ordinary adjective, and the masculine plural mortui stands on its own as a noun, "the dead".

Two things catch people out. Mortuus est is ambiguous between "he is dead" and "he has died", because morior is deponent and this is its perfect tense as well as its participle; context rarely leaves any doubt. And keep it apart from mortalis, which means "liable to die" and therefore covers the entire human race, where mortuus means the job is already done. Spanish muerto, French mort and English mortuary all come from it.
