confiteor

Confiteor, confiteri, confessus sum. A second-conjugation deponent from con- plus fateor: passive in form, active in meaning. Confessus sum is "I confessed", never "I was confessed", and the participle confessus is likewise active, so confessus est means he did the confessing.

It takes a direct object for the thing owned up to, peccata confiteri, or an accusative and infinitive for a whole admitted fact. The trap in this corpus is semantic. Ecclesiastical Latin uses confiteri Domino to mean "to give praise to the Lord", and the Psalms are full of it: confitemini Domino is "give thanks", not "own up".
