Corona, coronae is first declension feminine, borrowed from Greek korone, "anything curved". First declension, so it is regular throughout and gives no trouble.
The meaning to unlearn is the modern one. For a Roman a corona is a wreath, made of leaves or of gold worked to look like leaves, and it is a military and athletic honour rather than a mark of royal power: the corona civica of oak for saving a citizen's life, the corona muralis for first over the enemy wall. The monarchic sense arrives with Hellenistic kings and then with Christian Latin. The other live sense is geometric, any ring: a corona of soldiers around a town, or a crowd standing in a circle. Hence coronary arteries, which encircle the heart, and the corona of the sun.
