Ergo draws a conclusion, and unlike igitur it is happy at the head of its clause: cogito, ergo sum. It is the hardest of the Latin words for 'therefore', marking a real inference rather than the loose 'and so' that is itaque's job. There is also an archaic use, kept alive in legal and funerary formulas, where a genitive placed in front of ergo means 'for the sake of': virtutis ergo, 'on account of his courage'.
