Itaque is ita plus the enclitic -que, and so, and it draws the practical consequence of whatever has just been said. Position separates it from its rivals: itaque and ergo stand first in their sentence, while igitur normally waits for second place. Where ergo reaches for a logical conclusion, itaque tends to report what people therefore went and did.
