facile

facile is the neuter of the adjective facilis serving as an adverb, which is what third declension adjectives in -ilis do rather than forming an adverb in -iter. Comparative facilius, superlative facillime.

Its everyday sense is "without difficulty". In front of a superlative it means "unquestionably, by common consent", and facile princeps, "far and away the first man", is the standard Ciceronian compliment. Note also the supine construction facile dictu, "easy in the saying", where dictu is an ablative supine and not an infinitive. facilis is built straight on facio, "what can be done", the same logic that gives English "feasible" from French faire.
