hinc

Latin keeps three questions apart in its place adverbs where English is content with two, and hinc is the "from" member of the hic family: hic is "here", huc is "to here", hinc is "from here". The matching sets run ibi, eo, inde and ubi, quo, unde. Reading past that distinction is one of the commonest quiet errors a beginner makes, because all six words look alike and none of them is long enough to slow you down.

Beyond place it means "for this reason, from this cause", which is where the English "hence" in an argument comes from. Hinc illae lacrimae, a line of Terence that Cicero liked enough to quote, means "so THAT is what all the crying was about".

Paired as hinc ... hinc, or more often hinc ... illinc, it splits a scene in two: on this side and on that. In narrative it is a cheap and effective way of setting up a battle line.
