Liberi, liberorum, m., second declension and plural only in this sense; there is no singular liberus meaning "a child". If you need one child, say filius, filia or puer.
It is the same word as liber, "free", and that is not a coincidence but the definition. Liberi are the free-born children of the household, as against the slave children raised in the same house, so the term is legal and social before it is affectionate: it marks who inherits. In older legal formulae the genitive plural is often liberum rather than liberorum, which catches people out. For children as small people rather than as heirs, Latin reaches for pueri or infantes instead.
