Paries, parietis, m., third declension and masculine, despite an ending that looks feminine at a glance.

Latin has three words for wall and keeps them apart. Paries is the wall of a building, the one holding up a roof. Murus is the wall running round a town. Moenia, plural only and neuter, is the whole system of city fortifications. Swapping them is the standard slip and it reads badly. The domestic sense survives in Spanish pared and French paroi, and English takes the anatomical parietal from it.
