praeda

Praeda, praedae is first declension feminine, from prae plus the root of hendo, "seize", so the thing taken in front of you. It covers what an army strips from a captured town, what a hunter brings home, and what a wolf catches, with no change of register between them.

Latin distinguishes it from spolia, the arms and armour stripped from a defeated enemy, and from manubiae, the general's share converted to cash. Praeda is the whole haul. The verb praedor, praedari is deponent, so "they plundered the fields" is agros praedati sunt, never praedaverunt. English took predator, predatory and depredation from that verb, and prey came through French from praeda itself.
