Priusquam is prius plus quam, and the halves come apart as freely as they stay joined: prius abiit quam respondere possem is the same construction with the clause built round it. Antequam behaves identically.
The mood is the whole lesson. Indicative for a plain statement of what happened first. Subjunctive when the earlier action was aimed at getting in ahead of the later one - fugerunt priusquam hostis adesset means they ran so as to be gone before he turned up, and the arrival may never have happened at all. With a negative main clause the indicative is the rule.
