Not because it is difficult, but because it is long.

subordinates a reason, and the mood of its verb carries real meaning. An INDICATIVE means the writer vouches for the reason; a SUBJUNCTIVE hands it to somebody else, "on the grounds that", with the writer standing back from it. That is a distinction English can only make with extra words.

It ranks differently from : builds a subordinate clause hanging off a main verb, while just links two independent statements. Classical prose more often uses for "because", with for "since"; gains ground steadily in later and Christian Latin, which is why it sits this high in a corpus that reaches past the classical period.
