"si" opens a conditional clause, and the MOOD of the verb tells you what kind. The INDICATIVE presents the condition as a plain fact or a real possibility: "si hoc verum est", if this is true. The SUBJUNCTIVE marks it as unreal or merely imagined, and then both halves of the sentence go subjunctive together: present or imperfect for something contrary to fact now, pluperfect for something that did not happen in the past.

The negative is not "si non" but "nisi", unless. Latin also has a set of compounds built on it, including "sive" and "seu" for "or if" in a two-branch condition, both of which the source corpus records as forms of this word.
