Dum does two jobs. Meaning 'while', it normally takes the present indicative even when the surrounding story is in the past: dum haec geruntur is 'while this was going on', and that present tense is the idiom rather than a slip. Meaning 'until', it takes the indicative for a plain fact and the subjunctive when there is waiting or intention in it, as after exspecta. With the subjunctive it can also mean 'provided that', usually written dummodo.
