Everything about "ut" turns on the mood of the verb that follows it. With the SUBJUNCTIVE it introduces a purpose clause ("so that", "in order to"), an indirect command after verbs of asking and ordering, or a result clause after "tam", "ita" or "sic" ("so ... that"). With the INDICATIVE it drops all of that and simply means "as" or "when".
The purpose and result uses look identical until you read the main clause, so watch for the signal words: a preceding "tam" or "ita" points to result, and a negative result clause keeps "ut" and negates the verb with "non", whereas a negative purpose clause replaces the whole thing with "ne".
