recte

Recte is the adverb of rectus, "straight, ruled, upright", itself the participle of rego. Comparative rectius, superlative rectissime. It covers three things English keeps apart: physically straight, factually correct, and morally right, and Latin sees no reason to separate them - a straight line and a straight dealing are the same idea.

In conversation it has a use that catches people out. On its own, recte in Plautus, Terence and Cicero's letters is a polite brush-off, roughly "it's fine, no thank you". Someone offers help, the answer is recte, and nothing is being called correct at all. Elsewhere recte facere is simply to do the right thing, and non recte is the standard mild way of saying somebody has got it wrong.
