saltem

Saltem is an adverb, probably from the same root as salvus, and it marks a minimum: whatever else fails, this much stands. It usually follows the word it limits (unum saltem, "one at least"), though it can lead a clause.

Its natural home is the second half of a concession. You give up the larger claim and keep a smaller one: si non A, saltem B. In negative clauses ne ... quidem takes over the job, so saltem is a positive-clause word. Do not confuse it with the noun saltus, "leap" or "mountain pass", or with the verb salto, "dance", which look close but are unrelated in use. Spanish siquiera and Italian almeno cover the same ground; the Latin word itself did not survive into the Romance languages.
