Salve is the imperative of salveo, "be well, be in good health", frozen into a greeting. Say salve to one person and salvete to more than one, exactly as with vale and valete. It works at any time of day and in any register, from Plautus' comedies to the modern spoken-Latin circles, and the fuller formal version is salvere iubeo, "I bid you be well".

It belongs with salus, health or safety, and salvus, safe and sound, and through them with English salute and salutation. The English salve that you rub on a cut is a different word altogether, Germanic and not Latin, and the resemblance is coincidence.
