Vale is the imperative of valeo, "be strong, be well", used as a fixed greeting: literally "keep well", in practice goodbye. To more than one person it is valete. It is the standard last word of a Roman letter, and Cicero often signs off to his friends with vale et me ama, "farewell, and love me".

Because it is a farewell to the living and the dead alike, vale also turns up on tombstones and at the end of funeral poems: Catullus closes the poem at his brother's grave with ave atque vale, "hail and farewell". English took valediction and valedictory from vale and dico, the word for saying goodbye.
