Spatium, spatii, n., second declension. One word for two things English insists on separating: extent in space and extent in time. Spatium is the gap between two camps, the length of a racecourse, the width of a room, and equally an interval of hours or years. Hoc spatio is "in this interval", and spatium dare alicui is to give someone time.
The racecourse is probably the oldest use, which is why a lap is a spatium and why spatior means "to walk about, take a stroll" - the source of English expatiate, a word that has kept the wandering and dropped the legs. Space, spacious and, at one remove, the spatial of physics all come through French from the same noun.
