Suus is the reflexive possessive and always points back at the subject of its own clause, while eius, the genitive of is, points at somebody else. So pater filium suum amat is 'the father loves his own son', but pater filium eius amat is 'the father loves that other man's son', and English 'his' is ambiguous in both where Latin never is. That means translating into Latin forces a decision English lets you dodge. Note too that suus agrees with the thing possessed rather than the owner, so suam domum is 'his house' with a feminine ending because domus is feminine.
