is the intensifier: "himself, herself, itself, the very one". It agrees with the noun it underlines in gender, number and case, so it changes shape with whatever it is attached to: , , die. The declension is the pronominal one, with the irregular genitive and dative across all three genders.
It is not the reflexive, and the two get confused constantly. is "himself" as the object of the verb, referring back to the subject; merely emphasises whoever is in view, and it can attach to any person, including "I myself" ( ). Put them together and you get , "he saw his very self".
