totus

Totus, tota, totum is another of the pronominal adjectives: genitive singular totius, dative singular toti, everything else like bonus. Expect totius rather than toti in the genitive and do not write totae.

The sense is a thing taken as one undivided unit. That is what separates it from omnis, which in the singular means "every" and in the plural "all the individuals", and from cunctus, which gathers a group together. Tota urbs is the city as a single body; omnis urbs is every city there is. The trap is English: "total" descends from totus but means a sum, which totus never does - the Latin for a total is summa. Family: totalis is late, totaliter later still. French tout, Spanish todo and Italian tutto all come from it, so the commonest word for "all" in Romance is this one, not omnis.
