utique

Utique is ut with the generalising enclitic -que: "however it may be", and from there "at any rate, certainly, by all means". It is indeclinable, it governs nothing, and it attaches to whatever word it is emphasising.

The classical trap is negation. Non utique means "not necessarily, not in every case", narrowing a claim rather than denying it flat - the opposite of what an English reader assumes from "certainly not". In the Vulgate and the church writers that fine edge wears off and utique becomes a plain intensifier, "indeed, assuredly", which is the sense that dominates this corpus. Keep it apart from utinam, the particle of wishing, and from uterque, "each of two"; the shared ut- is a coincidence of spelling rather than a family.
