voluptas

Voluptas, voluptatis, f., third declension, built on the same root as volo, "to wish": a pleasure is what you want. That neutrality does not last. Epicurus made voluptas the highest good, Cicero and Seneca spent careers attacking the position, and by the imperial period the word carries a body with it - voluptas is indulgence, set against honestas, while gaudium is the calm joy a wise man is allowed to keep.

Christian writers inherit the hostility without changing a word of it, which is why in this corpus voluptas is nearly always something being renounced. English voluptuous preserves the sensual charge intact; volition and voluntary come off the same wanting with none of it.
